Utah 12 Scenic Drive

We had a fairly short drive from Cedar City to Capital Reef National park so we decided to take the scenic drive on Utah 12. But there was so much to see on this beautiful drive that it took us all day. We had a little rain as we drove toward Bryce Canyon.

Bryce Canyon was beautiful as always but so crowded we didn't stay long.

From Bryce we headed toward Escalante, Utah.  We crossed the northwestern edge of the Escalante National Monument. This is such barren country it is amazing that anyone could settle here all. The pink layer in the upper right hand corner is Bryce Canyon level.

We had lunch at Nemo's in Escalante where Calvin chatted with a group of University of Utah students on a field trip. He got a tip that the Calf Creek waterfall hike was a good hike, so we took it.

Along the hike to the waterfall we saw pictographs on the far canyon wall.  They must have been about twenty feet tall but they are a little hard to spot from a distance. Three figures above the center tree line.

Calf Creek fall was indeed impressive, especially so late in the year.
The views were just spectacular all the way. Giant vistas in full fall color.

We arrived at Capital Reef National Park just before sunset. I took pictures and Calvin took care of business while we watched the sun set.

Another great day on the road.

  2. This looks really spectacular. I saw a picture of lower calf creek falls on the internet, and i thought about suggesting it to you right about the time you were there. It looks incredible.
